An outbreak of hepatitis A has spread over the past year among gay men in Europe, the United States and Chile, and upcoming gay pride events and a vaccine shortage could worsen the situation, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

Between February 2016 and February 2017, three clusters involving 287 confirmed cases of hepatitis A (HAV) have been reported across 13 EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Most of the notified cases were among men who have sex with men (MSM) who had not been vaccinated against HAV.

Vaccination against the hepatitis A virus (HAV) in children two years of age and younger remains effective for at least ten years, according to new research available in the August issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. The study found that any transfer of the mother's HAV antibodies does not lower the child's immune response to the vaccine.
